  4. greatleapsideways:

“portraiture engages us in an imaginative act that never presupposes the inevitability of our own generosity to one another, but merely reminds us (often with persuasive sensitivity) of our essentially social nature. The Mona Lisas photographs arrange their subjects in a configuration that depends for its cogency on real underlying conditions, and that is premised on real commonalities between communities, cities, nations and cultures, but they also depend upon our willingness to recall ties to each other that predate and supersede locally distinguishing factors… They also depend on our humanity.”
— excerpted from an essay on the debut monograph Monalisen der Vorstädte by Ute & Werner Mahler, published yesterday on the gallery site.

Like the portraits; waaaay too much talk. Nothing in photography should need that much “explanation.”

  13. conscientious:

I’m oddly fascinated by commercials aiming at a very local market on US TV. I don’t know whether they have them in Germany now, but when I still lived there you wouldn’t see stuff like this. These commercials are painfully bad, but when they’re especially bad they reach an almost sublime quality. It’s like a train wreck: You can’t avert your eyes.

I’m with you, Jörg. Mediocrity can sometimes become its own kind of excellence.

This is Lisa and Henry, and they are madly in love with each other.  She’s the head custodian at the same elementary school I attended many many many moons ago.  Henry, a retired construction work, now gives singing lessons.  Lisa told me that Henry can sing like Israel Kamakawiwo.

Tom’s work is quiet and beautiful.
